8 Tough Breaks

Survey Says

“With so many pressures heaped upon us and so many expectations, it is hard to just be yourself.”

10th-grade girl

73 percent of middle school girls say that they worry about achievement.

58 percent of middle school girls say that they worry about being teased or made fun of.

28 percent of girls worry about whether other people think they are cool.

You goofed up. You didn’t make the team. You got a bad grade. You said something silly and embarrassed yourself in front of your crush. Or maybe you hurt your friend’s feelings and set off an ugly drama that now seems impossible to repair. Most girls will experience one or all of those upsets in life. Tough breaks are, well, tough. But take heart because those disappointments don’t have to derail you.

Amazing girls are not perfect. Heck, no one is perfect! Big news flash, right? Unfortunately, even though you might find yourself repeating that very logical truth in your head during those very cringe-worthy moments, it doesn’t always take the sting out of your mistakes. One thing that usually does help is knowing that other girls can relate. Those “most embarrassing moments” magazine columns are popular for a reason—and it’s not because girls take some twisted pleasure in reading about one another’s humiliation. Nope, you turn to those terrible tales because every girl has had her own share of awful, stomach-sinking experiences. It’s comforting to know that others have lived to tell about theirs. You will live through yours, too. And if you want to live your life to its fullest and be the best you can be, you’ll have to embrace the fact that you are amazing regardless of whether you’re playing your A game or not. Every time you “fail” at something, it also means you tried. Go ahead: allow yourself a few minutes to indulge in a little pity party if you must, but don’t linger there too long. Sometimes what you build up in your mind to be your biggest setback ever is actually an opportunity to take a gigantic leap forward!

If you spend all your time rehearsing for your “Look at Me—I’m Flawless” one-girl show and being frustrated that you just can’t seem to get it exactly right, you’ll miss out on a lot of chances to learn, grow, and have fun in your real (and yes, imperfect) life.

The Agony of Defeat and the Thrill of Being a Good Sport

“When I was playing goalie on my soccer team, I had a totally bad game, and let every goal in.”

Ari, 10

“I was playing the championship game for my volleyball team and we were winning 14-13. I went up to spike the ball to win the game and the opposing team blocked my spike.”

Sarah, 13

“In the first game of the soccer play-offs last year, I almost scored, but the ball barely hit the top left corner where the two posts met. I can still remember that shot.”

Marina, 11

Striking out is no picnic, but would you appreciate winning
